At breakfast, the hotel owners give a personal warm welcome to guests. The Avli does not feature a buffet. Guests order from the menu and the cook prepares it on the spot. Morning visitors find a basket with a variety of breads, “anthogalo” (fresh cream), a variety of local goat’s butter, fresh butter, homemade jam and grandma’s cake, honey from Sfakia and freshly squeezed juice (orange, apple, pineapple, peach and tomato). There is also tea from a mixture of Cretan herbs, and a selection of classic beverages. Guests can also try traditional yoghurt with thyme honey and fresh fruits. Other specialties include fried gruyere in batter (“saganaki”),”hondro”” (ground wheat soaked in milk with raisins), “ryzogalo” (rice pudding), strapatsada”” (scrambled eggs and tomato), “anthogalo” with “apaki” (local smoked pork or bacon), “anthotyro” cheese omelet, goat’s cheese, tomato and local sausage, “sfouggato” omelet with “anthotyro” cheese and zucchini. There is also the option of local fried sausage or the selection of Cretan cheeses and local cold cuts, pie of Sfakia (pie filled with myzithra and goat’s cheese served with walnuts and honey) and “tiganopita”, a pie served with sugar and cinnamon.
