Anemolethe Suites Hotel

Perched on a rocky slope, ANEMOLITHI Suites Hotel allows the visitor’s gaze to wander effortlessly over the Aegean Sea. A welcoming paradise that offers its guests a truly restful escape from everyday life.

The ancient Greeks honored the winds as gods, since many aspects of their lives depended on their aid. Greeks know well the meltemi, the strong northern wind that blows over the Aegean during the warm season. The first historical written reference to the meltemi appears in the work Meteorologica by Aristotle (384–322 BC). According to Aristotle, these winds blow after the summer solstice, which occurs on June 21, and the rising of the constellation of the Dog (Canis), which rises on July 25 and has as its brightest star the well-known Sirius. According to Eudoxus (404–335 BC), these winds blow from July 24 until August 31. These two references essentially constitute the first recorded observations of the phenomenon, which over the centuries changed name and is today described as the meltemi.

Islanders use names such as “kapellatos” when it snatches hats from the heads of passersby, “kareklatos” when it knocks down chairs in cafés, “trapezatos” when it overturns tables, and “kampanatos” when it causes church bells to sway, in order to describe not only the meltemi but, more generally, the strong winds that blow for many days each year in the maritime area of the Aegean.
